In the world of commercial stock there are tens of thousands of photographers doing their own thing, but there is only one Yuri Arcurs. Yuri is a Danish commercial photographer who licenses over 2 million images a year and has a full time staff of 12 people to handle the production and post production of all of his work.
Now I’m no Yuri. I do everything myself and am lucky to license a few thousand licenses a year. But I do have access to some short training videos put up by Yuri that I like to share with my models, because it helps show the difference between commercial looks and fashion looks.
In commercial looks photographers want natural poses, no pretzel knot poses. Warm and approachable expressions for the most part – although if you have any acting background and can express sadness and frustration easily that works nice as well. But that stone cold fashion model expression – useless – leave it at home.
So below are three of Yuri’s short video clips. He talks about free posing and smiles for the most part and the third is from models point of view.
I encourage all of my models to take a few minutes and watch these and think about them before our shoot.
